A BIOADHESIVE
Patent Number: PH-1-2019-000109
Patent Title: A BIOADHESIVE
Description
“TAPE-SCAR” is a bio-adhesive composed of tannic acid, polyethylene glycol, soy, and κ-carrageenan cross-linked with potassium chloride. It has a paste-like consistency and is applied as reinforcement around the sutured or stapled area of the intestine. It has superior mechanical properties, i.e. adhesion strength, over other commercial bioadhesives showing a 430% increase in peel force and adhesion than cyanoacrylate-based adhesives, a low swelling capacity which promotes increased adhesion, and is also stable in water for more than 7 days, the critical postoperative healing time. Furthermore, it showed antimicrobial activity against E. coli and Salmonella, the most common bacteria found in the human intestinal tract
Business Potential:
It can be produced at an inexpensive production cost of 81 pesos per gram inclusive of raw materials which are readily available and abundant in the Philippines, utilities, equipment, packaging, and manpower.
This technology can be employed in the pharmaceutical and medical industry.
