ORAL VACCINE
Patent Number: PH-1-2013-00256
Patent Title: ORAL VACCINE
Description
“FishVax” is a process for the development of simple, effective and cost-efficient oral vaccine for fish to increase harvests in aquaculture. The technology behind FishVax makes use of a process that enhances the effectiveness of the oral vaccine through clay microencapsulation of the antigen. The clay protects the antigen so that it is still intact when it reaches the fish’s hind gut, where immunization takes place more effectively. The encapsulated vaccine can be mixed with fish food resulting in a product which combines all the advantages of current available methods of fish vaccination: improved effectiveness leading to higher yields, ease of administration leading to lower costs, reduced stress to fish leading to less mortality, and reduced risks to workers. The new product, therefore, combines all the advantages of the three current methods of vaccination: improved effectiveness
Business Potential:
The FAO has identified the Philippines as one of the top ten aquaculture producers of food fish supply in terms of quantity. The country produced 512,220 MT (million tons) in 2004 and 623,369 MT in 2006, with growth rate averaging at 10.32%. China dominates the fish farming industry, producing 61% of total farm harvests worldwide in 2010. Other countries in the top 10 countries include India, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Norway, Chile, and Japan. The industry is expected to continue to grow, as other countries that were once not into fish farming have now ventured into this industry. For instance, Uganda posted an average annual growth rate of 141.83% and a production of 32,392 MT in 2006 (from 5,539 MT in 2004) in fish farming. These data indicate that there is a large and growing global market consisting of established and new entrants in the fish-farming industry. FishVax may be offered to animal vaccine manufacturers and to fish feed manufacturers for incorporation into fish feed.
