SARGATEK. BUILDING LIFE, CREATING OPPORTUNITY

Sargatek is the trademark for a flagship technology on the open-sea cultivation of the brown seaweed, Sargassum, from seedlings mass-produced in a land-based hatchery/nursery facility. Brown seaweed fills in the gap of the lack of raw materials for the processing of high-value natural products such as alginate, fucoidan, fucoxanthin and other antioxidants with a wide range of applications in the industry such as pharmaceutical (e.g. soft gel capsule), biomedical (e.g. wound patch/dressing), dental (dental impression material), food and beverages (as gelling, thickening, stabilizing agent), nutraceutical (e.g. anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory agents), health & wellness (e.g. alginate as facial and body scrub), agricultural (e.g. alginate as seed encapsulating material) and environmental (e.g. alginate as films to remove water pollutants in wastewater treatment). The mass production of brown seaweed seedlings provides a sustainable source of planting materials for the mariculture in a commercial and industry scale that can. This also mitigates climate change through carbon sequestration while providing livelihood opportunities for people in the coastal communities. The trademark is registered in the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).
